Over Facebook, my friend was telling everyone about this exchange thing she's doing by going over to Austria for a few months. She said you don't have to be a student to do it, and this got me thinking about doing it for about five or six months, just for a change of scenery to learn new things. Except the most logical one to take would mean I'm overseas for my eighteenth birthday.

This would also be a good excuse to get into some part-time jobs to save up for it, because fuck it's over a thousand dollars. I just really want to get outside Australia for a few months, except I don't know how to ask my Nan if I can go. It scares the crap out of me to leave because I do have a mild case of separation anxiety.

What do you think? Should I do it?

You should definitely try it. I went on such exchange during my third year of Uni and I loved it. It gives you entirely new perspective on things. I was scared shittless (that I'll miss my family, my friends, noone would like me, would have problems with a foreign language etc.) but I survived it and ended up with broader horizonts, few new possibilities for the future and lots of new friends all over the world. It also served as quite a good lesson for me and my mom, proving that I can make it on my own after all. :)

There are definitely pros and cons and it'll be scary but probably very rewarding. IDK, I've never done one of those but I've only heard good things from people who have done them.

I think you should try it, it's one of those things that only come once in a life time. I am not saying you'll never travel, but this is different in many ways. I think you should talk to Nan and tell her how you feel and you'll see everything will workout :D

I think you should definitely go for it! I was never given the opportunity for such things but I have friends who had and I've heard so many good things about their experience, the stuff they learned, the people they met, the place, the food...basically the general agreement that while home is home sweet home, staying in a place so very different from home is scary, thrilling but also very rewarding. A definite experience they'd never forget.

It'll probably look very scary to you right now but once you're THERE, I think things will gradually fall in place and you'd soon find your way about. *hugs*
